Starratt's "Ethical Leadership" has an interesting premise that educational leadership should depend on the interconnected virtues of presence, authenticity, and responsibility. He makes a nice argument for the importance of these virtues. If you enjoy ethics, you will probably enjoy his argument.The problem with the book is Starratt's structure and prose. He follows the fictional Al Auther as he stumbles through discovering his responsibilities as an educational leader. The first problem lies in the discovery process. Reading the exchange between Al and the fictional Professor Wissen is tortuously dull. The dialogue is stiff, the characters little more than cardboard. Admittedly, Starrat is no novelist, but he chose this as the method to frame his test. He should have dedicated more time to improving the quality of this or he should have done it a different way. The majority of his prose is dense, tangled, uninspired. If he had stated his points simply, he could have gone a long way to improving this book.
